But, when it comes to that one enumerated right of legal, law-abiding citizens, the right to keep and bear arms, that shall not be infringed . . . well, hooey says the left. So, as we sit here and watch a socialist dictator, once again, gun down innocent civilians and not be condemned by these American progressive socialists, what are we to think? And what just seems to be lost on these leftists is that laws are only followed by the law-abiding. Criminals don’t give a doggone about laws, that is why they are called “outlaws“– meaning they operate “outside the law.”
As posted on the Giffords’ gun control website on February 21, 2019:
“Today, members of the Giffords Veterans Coalition, called on Congress to swiftly pass the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019 (H.R.8), an important step in addressing America’s devastating gun violence crisis.
In a letter sent to congressional leadership, thirteen top veteran military leaders highlighted the fact that horrific mass shootings and the daily toll of gun violence have left Americans feeling less safe and called on Congress to close loopholes in the country’s background check system that leave communities in danger.
The letter reads:
“Each of us has, at some point in our lives, made the choice to risk our lives for our fellow citizens and place ourselves in harm’s way. We were trained, we were coached, and we were prepared for the dangers that we chose to face. This is not the case for most Americans, yet they continue to face danger on the sidewalk, in their homes, at school, and at work. It is in the same spirit that led us to serve in the armed forces that we ask you, our elected leaders, to help protect the American people from gun violence here at home. We urge you to support this legislation.”
The influential former military leaders point out why immediate action is needed as the gun death rate in America has reached its highest level in nearly 40 years.
They also note that over 90 percent of voters, including voters from gun-owning households, support passing legislation to require background checks for all gun sales. No background check is required for sales at gun shows, through online marketplaces, or between unlicensed individuals. This has allowed individuals who would otherwise be prohibited from purchasing or possessing a gun to easily buy guns through these unregulated sales.
The Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019 (H.R. 8) would require a background check on every sale, ensuring that people prohibited from purchasing firearms cannot exploit loopholes and purchase guns.”
Folks, I apologize for not catching this earlier and informing you. But, my first question for those who signed this letter is, do you know where the preponderance of gun deaths are coming from in America/ I will give you a hint: it’s not in places that respect and honor the Second Amendment.
I am quite sure that if you eliminated most urban population centers run by Democrats with draconian gun control laws, regardless of Heller v. DC and McDonald v. Chicago, you will find your answer. Speaking of Chicago, this is where gun violence is the normal, and it is not legal law-abiding gun owners, nope, criminals, gang members are the problem. And this is where the left severely restricts gun ownership. It is also in places like Chicago, where gun laws that would bring about harsh punishment of illegal gun owners are not enforced. As well, in this assertion by the Giffords organization, how many of these deaths that used to come up with this statistic is related to suicide gun deaths?
I was in Congress when Jared Loughner shot my colleague Gabby Giffords, who was a very pro-Second Amendment Democrat, and killed several of her staffers. Loughner’s problem was not with background checks, it was with his mental illness that went unreported . . . like many other cases each year.
As for this H.R. 8 bill, it did pass the Democrat-controlled House of Representatives. The Republicans offered up an amendment as part of a House floor procedural move called a Motion to Recommit. The amendment stated, in summary, that any illegal immigrant who sought to acquire firearms would be reported to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Agency. The amendment passed because some 24 Democrats voted in support of it — those are the ones Pelosi is furious with, and Rep. Ocasio-Cortez threatened to primary. This makes it clear that the progressive socialist left has no problem with an illegal immigrant acquiring a firearm. Well, no surprise there since Kate Steinle’s killer is free, found not guilty, even of criminal illegal firearms possession.
But, lemme tell ya what the Democrats want, and what H.R. 8 is all about.
Last weekend, I bought a really nice Beretta 92 M9A3 FS 9mm, with a mounted light, a handgun for the wife of my best friend of 31 years. I was the best man at their wedding, and his wife also served as a soldier. I bought the weapon and gifted it to her. Once again I went through the BATF 4473 form and passed another background check.
However, what Nancy Pelosi and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez want is for me to be charged as a felon and sentenced to prison, but an illegal immigrant can purchase a firearm and not be reported to ICE! The Democrats, these progressive socialists, do not want us able to defend ourselves. My best friend is on the road a lot, and I mean a doggone lot. His wife does not have a handgun, so I got one for her, for her birthday, for her self-defense. So, these left-wing progressive socialist jerks want to criminalize me for that?
When our daughter Aubrey was a student at Southern Methodist University (SMU) working on her Master’s degree in Molecular/Cellular Biology, I gave her a Taurus 9mm for her self-defense, since she was on the campus late at night doing lab research. I was not having my daughter walk around as a victim, prey for some chucklehead seeking to harm her. For that, H.R. 8 would criminalize me? Look, I’ve bought weapons at a gun show, and I had to undergo a background check. No law-abiding person wants to become a felon due to breaking an established gun law . . . However, that assertion does not apply to criminals.
As a matter of fact, let me remind y’all of some instances where H.R. 8 would make no difference.
As reported at The Truth About Guns:
“The murderers at a Las Vegas country music festival and the Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks, Calif., passed the same background checks they [Giffords Veterans Coalition] want Congress to expand.
In Parkland, concerned citizens reported the murderer to the FBI, but it was never followed up. Police were called to the murder’s home 39 times. He allegedly threatened his mother and brother with a gun. Students warned school officials. The laws were there. No one stepped in.
In Sutherland Springs, the military failed six times to report the murderer as a prohibited individual. The Department of Defense was required to report him to the FBI. The Air Force didn’t tell the FBI of his domestic violence court-martial conviction, involuntarily commitment to a mental health facility and dishonorable discharge – all grounds for barring someone from possessing a gun. The murderer lied on his background check form four different times. No one knew better because he wasn’t reported.
It wasn’t the military that fixed this. It wasn’t Giffords Veteran Coalition. It was the National Shooting Sports Foundation, the firearms industry trade association, that worked with Congress and got the Fix NICS Act signed into law by President Trump. Now, DoD and all federal agencies are required by law to report prohibited individuals and states are provided resources to submit all criminal and adjudicated disqualifying mental health records to the FBI.
Let’s be honest about the other claims. The authors maintain nearly all gun owners support blanket background checks. But the NSSF presented the full facts to gun owners. Retailers at gun shows already perform these checks as required by law, and Internet sales require a face-to-face transaction with a federally licensed firearms dealer with a background check.
Faced with the complete facts, more than half saw new laws as unnecessary. The reality is most criminals admit they get the guns they used in crimes through two primary means – theft and the black market.”
So, what is H.R. 8 all about? Easy, disarming the American people. They want to ensure that the day will come that they, the progressive socialist left, can threaten, intimidate, coerce, and enact violence against the American people in order to implement their rule, their socialist dictatorship . . . right here in our America. And to think retired senior military leaders, who once took an oath to our Constitution, supported this legislation — it’s disgusting, despicable, very disappointing.
I can tell y’all one thing, this retired Army office ain’t rolling like that. I will continue to stand for the Second Amendment, and honor the oath I took back on July 31, 1982. This is why I am honored to be a member of the Board of Directors for the nation’s oldest Civil Rights organization: the National Rifle Association. I must ask: what oath did these retired officers take? Either it was a different one, or they never really meant it.
“The Giffords Veterans Coalition is a national network of America’s veterans who advocate for evidence-based changes to our laws that will make our communities safer from gun violence.”
Members of the Giffords Veterans Coalition who signed the letter include:
General Peter W. Chiarelli, USA (Ret.)
General Wesley Clark, USA (Ret.)
General Stanley A. McChrystal, USA (Ret.)
General Michael Hayden, USAF (Ret.)
Admiral Thad Allen, USCG (Ret.)
Lieutenant General Mark Hertling, USA (Ret.)
Lieutenant General Russel L. Honoré, USA (Ret.)
Lieutenant General Claudia Kennedy, USA (Ret.)
Lieutenant General Norman R. Seip, USAF (Ret.)
Rear Admiral James Barnett, Jr., USN (Ret.)
Brigadier General Stephen A. Cheney, USMC (Ret.)
Commander Carlos Del Toro, USN (Ret.)
Captain Terron Sims, II, USA (Ret.)
I thank y’all for your service to our nation. But I have to call y’all out. Either you did not do your due diligence and study the issue, or you do not care. Your oath to the constitution has no statute of limitations, unless, your oath is now to a political, ideological agenda . . . and not the American people.
